The crochet sunflower granny square aka crochet sunburst granny square is one that has been on my to-do list since i learnt how to crochet years ago. Granny squares are perfect beginner crochet projects.

The fun part about this crochet project is that you do not have to use the exact color scheme although it would make sense to as it is a crochet sunflower granny square after all but you are not limited!

As you can see, it is a scrap yarn project, however, if you wish to make a larger project you will be needing a lot more yarn than scraps.

A Worsted weight yarn is perfect for this crochet sunburst granny square as it is only 4 rounds so it is not that big. The medium weight yarn will give it some height which you will appreciate if you are crocheting a large project.

Free Crochet Sunburst Granny Square Pattern

Round 1: Using the darkest yarn, (Brown yarn)

Make MR, (if you cannot make a magic ring then ch4, slst to the first ch and work in the tiny hole in the center). In MR, ch 3 (counts as a dc), mch 15 making a total of 16 dc. Join the round with a slst to the fidt ch3

Round 2: Puff stitch (Orange yarn)

Ch 2, make a puff stitch in the same st as the ch2. To make a puff stitch, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook)

Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook) rep this till you have 7 loops on the crochet hook, yarn over and pull through all the loops. Ch1 to secure. Rep this for all the 16 dc.

At the end, slst to the first puff stitch you made.

Round 3: Cluster round (Yellow yarn)

ch 2 (note that the first cluster will be different from the rest of the crochet sunburst granny square as we start with a ch2.

Yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat this two more times till you have a total of 4 loops on the crochet hook. Yarn over, pull through all 4, ch2 and rep for the rest of the clusters.

At the end you should have 16 clusters.

Round 4: Forming the corners (cream yarn)

Join yarn ton any ch 2 space, ch4 (this is your first tr)

Place 2 more tr in same ch 2 space

To work the sides, place 3 dc in the next ch 2 space, 3hdc in the next ch 2 space, 3 dc in the next ch 2 space then back to a corver. In the corner, place 3 tr crochet, ch2, 3tr crochet in same ch 2 space.

Then rep this around till your first 3 tr crochet. Place 3 more tr in the first corner, ch2 and slst to the ch 4 you made, ch1, cut yarn and weave in the ends.
